I haven't posted one of these for a while but this one's a real treat. Presenting !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , the USNS Mercy . Wearing her hospital whites and don't-shoot-at-me red crosses, the Mercy is the lead ship in her class of two (including her sister ship the USNS Comfort).
And this girl is big ... really big! The only US Navy ships that are larger, in fact, are our current lineup of super carriers. Here are some stats:
LOA
: 894ft (272.5m)
Beam
: 105ft (32m)
Displacement
: 69,360 tons (!)
Complement
: 61 civilian, 1214 military (full operating status)
Fun Facts : The Mercy started off as oil tanker in 1976 but was rechristened as she is after her refit/reconfig was completed in 1986. She carries no offensive weapons and firing on her is considered a war crime.
Side note: This ship makes me smile on many levels. The latest being that she is potentially the future duty for my son. He is starting at UC Berkeley pre-med in the fall and is planning to apply for a NROTC scholarship beginning his sophomore year.

Did you put the back of your hand to your head and yell, "Mercy!"?

I had a brother-in-law serve on the mercy while in Haiti. Interesting ship, I guess its pretty roomy.

Are you sure he wasn't on the Comfort ? Reason I ask in their wiki page specifically mentions the Comfort's involvement after the earthquake but Mercy's doesn't mention it on theirs. Then again ... wiki.
